Internet Tips

Stop Auto-Complete in Internet Explorer

When you are typing in a web address, Windows will, by default, try to complete the address for you. This is usually a nice convenience. It looks at what you’ve entered in the past and assumes that you want to go there again.

Some people find this annoying and want to turn it off. No sweat.

In Internet Explorer, Click on Tools and then Internet Tools. Click on the "Advanced Tab"

You will see a bunch of options with a check box next to them. Just click on the box to remove the check from the "Use inline AutoComplete" box and click Apply. You will probably see some other options in the list that you may want to change

Google Tips

Did you know you can search for pictures (photos, images, etc) on Google - not just text or web sites? There are 4 tabs at the top of the Google page - Web, Images, Groups and Directory.

By Default, Web is selected. Select Groups to search the 20 years of archived Usenet newsgroups. Choose Directory to see how they organize the web into categories.

If you choose Images, you get “The most comprehensive image search on the web.”

Type in your own name to see what images of you (if any) are out there on web sites. Pretty cool!

More Google Tips

This one is undocumented but cool (maybe a little scary for you privacy freaks). In the Google search bar type in your phone number - in quotes, skip the dashes and periods - just the numbers.

It will come up (usually) with your name, phone, address, city, state and zip plus a link to Yahoo Maps and MapQuest that will display your home or office in a map.

So when you give out your phone number to someone they can easily find out your real name, where you live and have a map showing directions to your door. Yikes!

Maybe that’s why so many girls give me a 900 number when I ask.

Still more Google

If you look at http://www.google.com/press/timeline.html for example, you will get a timeline for the year 2001 (broken down into months) that show the top search items (and misspellings!).

It’s a fascinating record of the year’s culture and how people reacted.

How about some Google for a Change?

Ever wonder what other web sites are linking to you? It’s easy to find out. From the normal Google search box (at www.google.com) just type in link: followed by the URL to see who links to that site. For example, type in

link:www.capinc.org

to see who links to Computers Assisting People’s site. No need for the http://
