What CPU do I have?
Sometimes you get a PC and you can't determine what CPU is in it. Or you are looking at a used system and want to check things out for yourself before buying. Intel offers a free Processor Frequency ID utility that you can download. They have 2 versions - 1 runs as a Windows app and the other as a bootable COM file.
It's the Ports, Stupid
If your PC is more than a year or so old you may not have the latest USB 2.0 or Firewire ports on the system. Firewire is pretty much essential if you have a digital video camera and want to edit videos on your PC.
I had been reluctant to upgrade the USB ports on my older system to USB 2.0 - until I saw the light from hardware guru Dan Davenport.
He showed me how his external backup hard drive copied files over 5 times faster to the USB 2.0 port than the USB 1.1 port. A 26 minute job was reduced to less than 5. That's significant!
